Why are the ancient people of Latin America portrayed so violently? Group Question! Celine,Macall,Colby,Patrick,Holli.
* They killed people for their their gods this was apart of there religious beliefs.
* They would harm them for food sources.
* Like the Inca and the Aztec the Maya also sacrificed there people by cutting a hole in there chest and ripped there hearts out to send up to the gods.
* Like the Inca and the Aztec the Maya also sacrificed people because of their religion.
The reason why the people of Latin America are portrayed so violently is because it is part of their religion that they sacrifice people to make them lose their gods. This is how the Aztec kill their people that they sacrificed: they get a stick, stab it through their chest and rip their heart out. They then send the soul of the heart to their gods. They also eat the people that they sacrificed by cooking the heart and the body. The most common human sacrifice that the ancient Latin Americans use to kill people with was the heart extension. This is very violent because right now in modern time, people in the United States would not do that. The main reasons that the Maya, Inca, and Aztec sacrificed these people was for their religious beliefs. When they killed or "sacrificed" these people they that they were doing it because it was what their god told them to do and that they would get great luck. When there was repeated laziness, it could lead to death, such as hanging, stoning or being pushed off a cliff. Also, the Aztec invented the number zero and they built very interesting places. Depending on the situation the Maya, Aztec and Inca might not kill people.

Aztecs:
* Every 52 years they would make a human sacrifice at midnight. They feared that the universe would end if they did not keep the gods strong. If the sun rose the next morning, then the sacrifice had been successful. They would then set the body on fire.
* The Aztecs once killed 84,400 people in four days.
* They sacrificed the person on top of a temple. The priests would cut them open with a knife and tear out their hearts. They would then put the heart in a bowl near a statue of a god, and throw the body down the stairs.
* The priests and the people watching the sacrifice would stab themselves.
Incas:
* The Incas were violent because an ordinary villager could be turned into a soldier
* The Incas were also portrayed as violent because of the rituals they did to appease there gods such as the ripping out of hearts of newborns.
* Incas were also portrayed as violent because they fought and captured neighboring tribes, and then sacrificed them as well
* The Incas would fight all other tribes to expand their empire to it's full extent
*
Mayans:
* Newborn to 8 year old children were sacrificed at the beginning of their calender, or when a new king came to the throne. Their hearts were torn out, similar to the Aztecs.
* They would tie a rope around the people being sacrificed, and then throw them into a gulf. They would then pull them up and bury the bodies. and then brought them up and buried them.
* The Mayans have many festivals and in those festivals they usually sacrifice animals.
* The Maya also sacrificed there prisoners. The prisoners were most often from neighboring tribes.

I think that the ancient Latin Americans are portrayed a little too violently. After all, it was their religion, and it was just the way things were done back then. They probably didn't think that human sacrifice was as horrible as people think it is today. People think very differently today than they did hundreds of years ago, when the ancient Latin Americans were in power. I think that most people today think that they were terrible and violent people, just because of their sacrifices and religious beliefs. People often don't think about all of the good things they have done, things that affect the world today. For example, the ancient Latin Americans invented chocolate and chewing gum. They invented the number 0. The world today would not be the same without these things. So yes, I do think the ancient Latin Americans are portrayed too violently.

In the books and videos we have watched, the ancient people of Latin America were portrayed violently. One reason for this was that the Aztecs captured enemy soldiers and sacrificed them in religious ceremonies. I think that is too violent, they could just question the soldier for where the enemy camp is. I don't think they were as bad as people portrayed though because they did invent a lot a lot of things, like chocolate, the calendar, the number zero, and other things. Really, people just saw how different they thought the ancient Latin Americans religion was. To them, our religion was probably curious. I think that the ancient people of Latin America were portrayed violently because of there different religion that had ceremonies that Spanish had never seen before and the different warfare.

These are some of the reasons that the ancient people of Latin America were portrayed so violently, The penalty for repeated laziness could be death by hanging, stoning, or being pushed off a cliff. They used people as sacrifices and then most of the time after they were done with all of their spiritual stuff they often ate their sacrifices. They used people as sacrifices and then most of the time after they were done with all of their spiritual stuff they often ate their sacrifices. When they sacrifice cut out the heart cook the body. They ritually slaughter animals. Aztecs reported that they sacrificed 84,400 prisoners in over the course of 4 days. One theory that was widely believed was the Meso American diet was lacking protein and that cannibalism of a sacrificial victims was a necessary part of the Aztec diet. The Human Sacrifice is part of the Aztecs religion. The most common human sacrifice was heart extension. I think that they could have chosen something else to sacrifice instead of people. I also think that they should not have sacrificed people. I also think that if they were not to sacrifice people they would not have been portrayed so violently. I think that the human sacrifice is very violent and harmful to me I think it was disgusting that they did that. I think this because mostly the reason that they are portrayed violently because they sacrifice people. I think they are portrayed correctly because i was very disgusted that they sacrificed people and they boiled their bones and ate them. I also think that if they were not to be violent they would not be portrayed like this so then people would take more note of the good things that they have done. The Aztecs invented chocolate, chewing gum, rubber and even discovered the number zero. The number zero greatly and is important in our math system. The Aztecs are great mathematicians. Human sacrifice was a very complex ritual. The sacrificial victims were usually warriors but were sometimes slaves depending upon the god and the needed ritual. If they could not find people that were willing to be sacrificed they would capture small children or even babies, sometimes if they could find a weak enough person they would even sacrifice unwilling people. Those are some of they reasons that the Aztecs are portrayed violently.

Madison S's Why is it important that we understand the ancient people of Latin America? What do they have to do with us here in Vermont?
It is important because some of their culture and history has changed what our culture is like today. Some ways that they have affected/changed our culture is when Christoper Columbus discovered America the Inca and the Aztec people lost power to the heavy European invasion. Another reason why it is important is because it is important for us to learn about different cultures and how they lived and what their rituals were. Another way that Latin America has affected me is by them having he Cold War. The way that the cold war has affected me is because in the 1950's the war moved closer to the united states because of poverty and poor health care. Another thing why it would be important that we understand that is because they invented many things such as the number 0, chocolate, chewing gum, and even rubber! There are many ways that Latin America has affected me and it is very important that i understand that country. There are many other countries that have affected me too!

AidanT's Why was it so easy for the Spanish to "colonize" Latin America when there were such strong civilizations already there?
Why was it so easy for the Spanish to "colonize" Latin America when there were such strong civilizations already there?
It was so easy for the Spanish to "colonize" Latin America because of a few of reasons. First, the Latin American civilizations' spears didn't compete with the Spanish's guns. Second, the Spanish had horses which was a form of transportation that the Latin American people had never seen. Finally, the Spanish brought diseases that they were immune to, but killed or made many Latin American people ill. Those are the reasons why it was so easy for the Spanish to "colonize" Latin America.
